Endoscopy Unit

Enhancing Safety and Improving Workflow

Endoscopy Units are usually dedicated areas within a hospital where medical procedures take place with an endoscope, a thin flexible camera, to examine certain parts of the digestive system and understand the cause of gastrointestinal symptoms. Following diagnosis, appropriate treatments can be given. Procedures performed may include gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and cystoscopy. Bronchoscopy usually also takes place in the Endoscopy Unit using a bronchoscope, a flexible camera, to help diagnose and sometimes treat conditions of the airways and lungs. Usually, these procedures are performed on ambulatory patients in an outpatient setting but in some cases ill patients may require emergency procedures. Appropriate medical equipment needs to be in place to help clinicians perform the medical procedure.
