S-equiP is the new name for Starkstrom’s market-leading fully integrated operating room equipment solution. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is arguably the greatest advance in diagnostic medical techniques to have taken place in the last century. As part of its ongoing commitment to medical design and innovation, British owned and based medical engineering company Starkstrom has added an MRI Chamber to its already extensive portfolio, extending its expertise beyond the confines of the critical care and operating theatre areas.

The Starkstrom MRI Chamber features a unique dimmable LED light system, which eliminates strobe effects and is 60% more efficient than other lighting systems. Research carried out in conjunction with the National Physics Laboratory has led to the use of more effective material in magnetic field shielding, and new quench thermal insulation material has improved performance but reduced risk. The development of a new computer modelling programme ensures that unnecessary costs are not incurred through “over engineering”, and that potential issues with adjacent equipment are identified before installation. The chamber has already been installed at several major PFI projects including Barts and the London Hospitals, and the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

As with all Starkstrom’s products, the MRI chamber can be purchased “supply only”, or as part of a total turnkey project. Customers opting for the turnkey solution, which incorporates the MRI room, emergency quench, magnetic field and final testing, will receive an MRI installation featuring elements all provided by one trusted specialist - Starkstrom’s unique capacity to do this is part of what sets it above the competition.

Keith’s career thus far has been with two well established UK blue chip companies, both of which he joined while they were in their infancy. He has worked in the acute clinical environment for over 25 years, so is very aware of the tasks that hospital staff are required to perform, the obstacles they face and the financial challenges that departments currently have to contend with. He believes a vital part of his role will be to use his experience and understanding to focus on clinicians right from the start of a project, making sure they are fully informed about Starkstrom’s products and are in a position to request and use the equipment that they know will work best for them, rather than just having to accept what they are given – it is this grass roots approach which has taken Starkstrom forward and continues to differentiate it from the competition.

When Science Fiction becomes Science Fact

Since their development in the 1960s, lasers have turned science fiction into science fact. Lasers are well established in medicine and surgery, and dramatic advances can be anticipated in the future as developments continue at an ever-increasing pace. The use of lasers does, of course, present its own safety challenges, and stringent guidelines exist to ensure organisations comply with best practice when providing end users with a safe environment in which to operate potentially hazardous lasers. Guidelines can be met by the use of a laser interlock system, which provides automatic shut-off of the laser beam if safety doors, covers or blinds are opened. The most effective option is to install the system right at the start of the operating theatre design and build, making theatre safety a priority from the beginning of the process, rather than responding to an accident further down the line.

Starkstrom’s Lasermet Interlock Systems ICS-5e and ICS-5s allow hospitals to meet – and exceed – laser safety requirements. Based on a tried and tested safety control system, the newest incarnation of the Lasermet Interlock System has been totally updated internally to include the latest in electronic technology and design, and is now supplied fully integrated into the market-leading Starkstrom eTCP Touch Screen Theatre Control Panel, or on a standalone enclosure. It has a simple, easy-to-use touch screen control panel which is durable and wipe-clean for enhanced infection control. Illuminated warning signs can also be integrated in the Lasermet Laser Interlock System, allowing accurate indication of room use and equipment status. An important element of the system is that it can be “future proofed”, and then activated when the technology comes on-line without disrupting the theatre fabric or necessitating extended shutdowns.

Starkstrom has equipped the new Peterborough City Hospital’s 18 theatres with its clinical medical gas pendants, operating theatre and examination lights and surgeons’ theatre control panels.

Six of the main theatres were fitted with ultra clean canopies and in addition, two critical care areas - the adult and paediatric ITUs, were also fitted with Starkstrom’s clinical pendants. A five year maintenance contract, servicing Starkstrom and other manufacturer's products, gives access to a 24hr technical support line saving time and money and ensuring that the complex equipment is maintained by the people who know it best.

Our engineers can view and record events that have occurred over the lifetime of all of the above products . The system provides a full account of the causes of each condition, combined with an analysis of the exact sequence of alarm conditions. This in turn allows our engineers to track long-term performance trends, identify potential future problem areas, and report back to the hospital management team.
